Participants will review tools and techniques on how to assess and treat the adolescent substance user in a 1:1 setting. When to refer to a higher level of care will also be covered. The trainer will go over CBT, MI, and Strength based skills to use with the adolescent, with a focus on alcohol and cannabis use. Ways to ask questions to illicit increased honesty will be reviewed. Actual case examples will be used and discussed.

Jennifer Haywood, LISW, LICDC is an addictions specialist and has worked in the field of mental health and chemical dependency since 1996 when she obtained her MSW from OSU. She has worked in a variety of settings including drug/alcohol treatment centers, mental health treatment centers, and outpatient practice. Most recently, she started her own private practice in November 2011. She has been an adjunct professor at OSU in the social work program since 2003, and at Columbus State Community College since 2002. She teaches a variety of courses including DSM-IV-TR, Clinical Groups, Mental health, addictions, and human behavior. She has been a trainer in the area of mental health and substance abuse since 1998 and specializes in addiction related trainings. She usually conducts 20+ trainings/year. Her passion is with addicts, and if anyone wants to learn more about obtaining substance abuse licensure she is happy to help!.
