Rep. Harris
has been a long time advocate for children. She has been a public school teacher, an administrator in the Ohio Department of MRDD under Governor Celeste, and staff to former Senator Howard Metzenbaum.
Most recently, she has led a successful volunteer and event management business, participated in several political campaigns and is an active community volunteer. In her first term in the Statehouse, Rep. Harris has already emerged as a champion for children. She is the primary sponsor of legislation that would 1) expand the class of persons who may execute a caretaker authorization affidavit or power of attorney to care for children, 2) another bill that would keep Ohio kids safe when they are placed in out-of-state residential facilities, 3) and a bill that would officially designate a day in April as Children’s Day.
In her years as a public official, including her terms as Mayor of Grove City (96-08) and now as a State Legislator, she has supported non-profit agencies, like her constituent the Buckeye Ranch, and the children that they serve. We look forward to partnering with Rep. Grossman as she spreads her influence across the state.
Senator Miller has been an advocate for children and families for decades. He served in the Ohio House for 16 years and was elected to the Senate in 2003. He is regarded as an expert in the development of public policy on health, education and human service issues. Most recently, OACCA has been proud to partner with Senator Miller on a number of matters. He addressed hundreds of foster youth and advocates at our last Advocacy Conference and Ohio Independent Living Youth Summit. In fact, he was an active listener last year when we shared our concerns for the safety of children who are placed outside of our state. As a result, he is the primary sponsor of SB 142, which is the Senate companion to Rep. Harris’s out of state placement legislation.
